QUESTIONS FREQUENTLY ASKED
If it’s your first guitar, you wanna ask questions like, “Does this guitar fit me? Will this guitar stay in tune? Does this guitar play well, are the strings too high, can it be adjusted? Is this guitar in my price range?” First guitars should not be a huge investment. Now they don’t have to be cheap either. Basically, you’re looking for a solid guitar for less than $400. Does the guitar you’re looking at have eye appeal? If you don’t like the way a guitar looks, you might not be inspired to play it. That’s why there are so many shapes and options. To each his own. Find the guitar that speaks to you and then ask all the right questions. If it looks cool, pick it up. Is it too heavy? Is it too big or small? What does it sound like?
* Buying an acoustic guitar ???
Acoustic guitars are built to project volume from the sound hole in the middle of the body of the guitar. Many companies send the guitars out with the strings high off the neck, so the instrument has a lot of volume. If you have strong hands and have been playing for a while, that might be desirable, but small hands or hands that have been on an electric for a long time will find an acoustic guitar hard to play and very discouraging. If you’re wanting to know how to buy a guitar that is acoustic, ask questions like “Can these strings be lowered? Does this guitar have an adjustable truss rod? Is the neck good and straight on this guitar? Does this guitar have a pickup?” Many acoustic guitars don’t come with a strap pin on the neck heel. You might ask, “If I buy this guitar, will you include a strap pin and strap? Does this guitar come with a case or gig bag?
*Is guitar setup important ???
Having your guitar set up properly can greatly improve your playing experience. It’s like taking your instrument in for a tune-up. The repair technician will check several things, like making sure that the neck is straight, that the bridge is the proper height, that strings are the right distance from the fretboard, and that intonation is consistent across the entire fingerboard.
Guitars that are not properly set up may be difficult to play, because the strings are too far away from the fretboard, requiring more effort to press them down. Or if the strings are too low, you may notice buzzing or other unwanted noise. Almost every instrument that comes through the workshop is set with precision, so that when you pick it up it’s ready to rock.
Guitars woods will change in response to temperature, humidity, and time, so you will want to periodically have your guitar set up. We recommend having your guitar set up every six months. A motivated do-it-yourself-er can get the tools to do set ups at home, but most players bring their guitar to a reputable shop or repair technician for set up work. Our repair shop not only provides excellent service, they can also help spot potential problems or suggest possible upgrades that you may not be aware of.
*What type of music do you want to play ???
Do you see yourself strumming folk songs and ballads around the campfire? Do you dream of shredding heavy-metal rock riffs? Jamming the blues with friends?
The type of music you want to play will guide your decision. An acoustic guitar is probably easier for most beginners to learn. There are none of the complexities (and expenses) of amplifiers and effects pedals. The nylon strings of most acoustic guitars will be gentler on beginner fingertips. And you’ll hear clearly the way your fingertips affect the sound and music that you make.
On the other hand, an inexpensive electric guitar probably performs much better than a cheap acoustic one. The solid-body is the electric is fundamentally easier (and cheaper) to make than the hollow body of an acoustic. The action (height of the strings above the fretboard) of many low-end acoustics make them virtually unplayable. In very oversimplified terms, you can buy a quite playable electric guitar, with an amplifier, for about $600. You’d probably need to spend at least $100 more to buy a decent quality new acoustic guitar - without any form of amplifier.
You also need to consider your practice environment: Somewhat counter-intuitively - its much easier to play an electric guitar quietly (so as not to disturb family and neighbors) than it is an acoustic one. An acoustic guitar’s volume is only marginally controllable.

about us
Welcome to Quoiba Guitars repair , build , relic and parts page .
With a deep passion for music and guitars for over 35 years , finally has come the time where I start taking my enthusiasm for building and repairing guitars professionally .
I am committed to provide a top quality repair service for all types of guitars , from basic setups to the more complex restoration needs , with a dedication to preserving the integrity of each guitar and ensuring every instrument gets the care and attention it deserves .
I have been completing repairs and setups for clients recently and am learning something new with every instrument . Every guitar that comes across my workbench will receive my special " pat n rub "
I have over the last 6 months been acquiring professional guitar repairing tools and have been putting together quite a large catalogue of bodies , necks , pickups and other parts .
I have enjoyed immensely learning about the processes of setups and repairs over the years , and am looking forward into the future of making my own guitars from scratch .
At my workshop located in Devonport named " Quoiba Guitars " , yes for those that know the North west region is a little confusing , but the name has sort of stuck , I have been putting guitars together , with what I think , have a noticeable difference in style , flair and their own sense of individuality .
These guitars will hopefully be the foundation of my own line of guitars in the future . I have a few of these guitars at the workshop for you to try out .
If you need to just ask a question on what type of guitar / bass , amplifiers , pedals , you may want to buy , if your a learner or avid player the same , or just have that guitar / bass , sitting at home collecting dust that just needs a bit of love and attention , or breath a bit of life back into your instrument , to get you back playing again , hit me up or pop into the workshop for a chat .
Sometimes buying a guitar for your children can be confusing too , "what should I buy ? , what's good ? and how much should I spend ? " these are questions I always get asked . Hopefully I can help with these sorts of questions .
Maybe you have a desire to design your own guitar but do not have the knowhow on how to go about it , I can help . Nothing is out of the realms of possibilities . Its all up to your imagination really .
Need to upgrade those muddy pickups or , want to change the tuning ( say from E to B ) on a particular guitar or simply change your tuning pegs out for locking tuners ?
By no way do I declare myself a " Luthier " as that is another level completely , and if I am not qualified for the job , with my contacts, I will gladly put you in contact with someone who can help with more technical expertise .
Let me help you get back to making great music again , or starting your musical journey .
Cheers Bretty
